Oscar Passed Away Today

After his last antibiotic shot at 8 AM this morning, we unhooked him from his IV and let Oscar relax and just be a normal cat for a while. He visited all his favorite sinks in the house and finally laid down in our bedroom and rested. He couldn't hardly walk, he couldn't eat and had a hard time even drinking water. Dangerguy and I took him to the vet around 5:30 today. It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

Dangerguy was absolutely wonderful through the entire thing. He took Oscar to and from the vet many times, and did all his shots, and managed his IV line, and gave him love and kisses when I just wanted to escape. I don't know how I would have made it through this week without him.

Oscar Update

I wish I had better news, but Oscar is still very sick. The doctor is not sure what is wrong with him. It is likely another massive bacterial infection again, likely in his brain. He's can't really move around all that well still, but he is eating more now, so I guess that's good.

Usually when he is this sick, we have to keep him at the emergency clinic all night, but luckily our vet now gave us the IV equipment to take home and we are able to keep him here in the bedroom right beside us, where he is more relaxed and comforted by our presence.

I sure hope he pulls though.

Don't Hate Me Because I Write Bad Poetry

And while we're on the subject of Oscar, I was feeling silly and wrote this poem about Mr. Oscar while I was sitting here loafing on the couch tonight, and I thought I'd share it. I'm either a dork or a crazy cat lady. (Both is also an option.)

Oscar, how do I love thee?
Let me count the ways:

I love the little sound you make when jumping on the bed.
I love the way you wake me up by nibbling on my head.

I love the way you follow me from room to room to room,
Unless of course what I do begins to zoom or boom.

I love it - how you clap your paws to catch toys that fly by -
You chase and stalk because that duct snake just will not die!

I love the way you bat things down when it's not going your way.
I love it - how you tell us what's wrong with your litter everyday.

I love the little ewok noises you make when I give you a squeeze,
Or how you cannot help but purr when you're just being teased.

I love the way you look at me when I am singing your song,
And curl up on my chest to sleep the whole night long.

* Yawn *

Good night!

Introducing Oscar the Cat Dog

OscarOnPillow_sm

Isn't he adorable?

When I was young, we had always had dogs. My Mom was a sucker for dogs left on the side of the road or abandoned in a schoolyard. She treated all of them like little humans, and made up songs about them.

When I graduated from college, I wanted to get a cat to keep me company in my first apartment. I got Oscar from the PetSmart bulletin board. He was already 3 years old. (How does anyone get rid of a cat they've had that long?) He was declawed and he seemed to be pretty normal until I got him back to my apartment, when he spent hours wandering around and hissing at all the furniture. I thought he was defective.

Eventually that night, he calmed down and then over the course of a few weeks, he became my little lovebug. When I came home from work, he would tell me about his day, and when I went to sleep, he would curl up with me. He follows me around, and he comes when called. I think because I always grew up with dogs, I treat Oscar like a dog, and turned him into the little cat dog he is today.

And just like my Mom, I have a whole library of songs that I've made up just for him. They're all based off of children's songs. Here's a sample:

To the tune of Freres Jacques:
Little Oscar, Little Oscar
How are you? How are you?
Sitting in the sink
and
Batting at the water
You're so cute, You're so cute

Pathetic, I know. There are about 50 versions of that song, but this is a common one since he is often found sitting in the bathroom sink batting at dripping water.

Anyway, I will have a lot more stories about Oscar here in the blog, but I wanted to give him a proper introduction while I had nothing exciting going on that I desperately needed to blog about.
